Last week Brian and I finally got our act together and set up an appointment to meet with an estate planning attorney. We went in to finally get our wills made and put in order. (Talk about hard conversations and dilemmas that you hope you will not have to think about for a very long time. Especially with a young child. But at least everything will be official and on paper.)
Anyway, so the hubby and I were driving to the office and he asked me about the attorney we were meeting with.
“I don’t know. I am not even sure what her name is. I just remember talking to her and she laughed at some weird moments.”
“What do you mean she laughed at weird moments?”
“I don’t remember! I just remember it was weird.”
Well, we go inside and meet our attorney in a board room. Brian is sitting across from me and she is sitting in the center. As we are going through our information, she takes notes and then she starts randomly laughing at not-funny moments.
We ask her some questions, and then she responds, “Blah, blah, blah, like if you two leave the office, and go out and get hit by a truck…chuckle, chuckle, laugh, laugh.”
Brian and I stare at each other across the table. I widen my eyes like, See I told you so!
Brian puffs his cheeks to stop laughing and I turn my head away.
Imagine most of our visit continuing this way. It was strange to hear laughter and giggles from an estate planning professional, especially when she seemed thoroughly entertained with our impending doom.
But then, I suppose it is better than being too serious and morbid. I mean, if you are going to go out and get hit by a truck at least find the humor in it! Especially if your clients are paying you to put together their papers!
We will have to go back and sign everything soon, so let’s hope we can make it through that awkwardness.
