This year I want us to be more conscientious about how often we go out to eat (including ordering take-out). It’s so easy to just place an order somewhere at the end of the day and we all look at each other and go, “Um, so what are we having for dinner?” Going out is a fun treat, but I think we have been taking advantage of it too much! I looked at our budget from last year and half of what we spent at the supermarket was spent at restaurants! Eeek!
On Sunday morning I flipped through the grocery circulars in our paper to create a grocery list. Since there weren’t any great sales, I thought it would be fun to try this Six Sisters’ Slow Cooker Freezer Meals and empty out the meat stash in our spare garage freezer.
We haven’t had much luck with crock pot meals, usually because we find them to be a bit dry when done, so this will be a good experiment to see which ones we like and can later incorporate into the idea of freezer cooking. Especially with a new baby coming in a few months! This will hopefully help make our lives a little easier.
This was my first time chopping up the vegetables in one session. I think I really like how that turned out because that will be less prep time for me as the week goes on. I can just focus on getting the side dishes set up and ready to go. I got super organized and wrote down the dish and the cook time on the bag.
Since most of our meat is coming from the freezer, I just did the vegetables (except for the potatoes) and put them in the bag. When we thaw out the meat, I will toss it into the bag to marinate the night before.
So far so good! We have had two of the meals (Black Bean Taco Soup, as seen below, and the Cilantro Lime Chicken) and have been pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed it.
The convenience of this has been wonderful and now I want to make an area in our regular freezer to store these meals!
