I spent last Wednesday (the 4th) photographing what our day looks like. It was a pretty typical Wednesday for us, and I love having this written down to look back together some day.
(WARNING: POST IS LONG, AND IPHONE PHOTO PIC HEAVY!)
4:45AM: I hear Bunny turn off her noise machine through the baby monitor. Her bare feet pitter-patter on the tile floor as she runs down the hall and into our bedroom. I notice Brian is not in bed, he’s asleep on the couch. (Sometimes he gets worked up and has trouble falling asleep.)
Bunny wants me to hold her and she tells me she is hungry and needs to eat RIGHT NOW. “No,” I tell her, “you have to wait until it’s not dark out.” We both fall asleep.
5:45AM: Brian is up and about. He kisses me good bye and heads to work.
6:00AM: Nagini is awake. This is early for her, but it’s because she can’t find her Ya-Ya (her lovey). Bunny is up too and demands breakfast.
6:05AM: My alarm goes off. I have an alarm so that I can have a few minutes of screen time on my phone. It’s not going to happen today.
(I’ve changed my screen time habits this year. I play on the phone in the early morning before the kids are up, when the kids are napping/quiet time, and when they are in bed. More on that another time.)
6:25AM: I make breakfast. First, a bowl of cereal for the girls. One overeasy egg for Nagini. She likes me to cut up the yolk and egg so they are mixed together. Two egg whites for Bunny. She does not like egg yolks.
7:27AM: Nagini gets a time-out for a tantrum and while that’s happening I open the shutters and make the bed.
7:29AM: Time to change out of pajamas. The girls are very specific about what they want to wear. It’s going to be a high of almost 80 degrees today. We go through a couple of options. Nagini picks a skirt and Bunny chooses shorts.
7:35AM: Time to brush teeth, get hair combed/done. Their hair accessories are sort of contained in their bathroom counter. It used to be really organized, but as long as it’s all in one place, it’s all good.
7:40AM: The girls are in their playroom. Right now they are really good about keeping each other company. You know, until they start fighting, which happens just as quickly.
7:47: I take out leftover laundry from the night before.
7:50AM: After changing Nagini’s diaper (she is 75% potty trained, but accidents happen), I run a load of laundry. We cloth diaper here except for sleep and going out.
7:55AM: Clean up the leftover dishes and kitchen.
8:09AM: Storytime on the couch. We read Fancy Nancy: Bonjour, Butterfly.
8:37AM: I finish getting ready and dressed. The girls play in our closet and the bathroom. They love my mirror with light. it’s always smudged with little fingerprints! We have make-up time, which basically involves playing with my brushes.
8:44AM: Put away the load of laundry. They “read” books while I fold laundry next to them.
8:48AM: Nagini helps me put today’s load of laundry into the dryer. I am a big fan of having my kids help with chores. It’s not always done well, or even properly, but it gives them the mindset of contributing to the household.
9:04AM: I finish straightening the family room. We have a dance party in the office. We keep a YouTube channel of kids songs. They don’t watch it since I keep it in a hidden window, but we listen to it on repeat a lot! Their current favorites are this one and this one.
9:22AM: We have office time where I check the calendar. While that happens they doodle on my planner. Shortly after, they take off for the playroom and I go get their snacks ready.
On Mondays we usually do a playdate with a mom’s group, or some kind of activity. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays we go to two different libraries for storytime. On Thursdays we run errands together. Today we have storytime at the library.
I set an alarm on the oven timer so the girls know when we are leaving.
9:32AM: The girls are getting along so I get a snack of yogurt and strawberries to play a round of Plants vs. Zombies 2. It’s pretty much the only game I play on the iPad. I lose and vow to try again later. I load the dishwasher and run it. 9:42AM: I pull out the laundry from the dryer and put it in the family room.
9:43AM: It’s time to go to the library. It takes a little longer just to get shoes, snacks, and kids all in the car.10:00AM: The library opens and I pick out a few books before toddler storytime begins.
When it’s over the kids spend a few minutes at the table coloring and we head back into the room for preschool storytime. Bunny likes to sit up front on the floor with the librarian, but Nagini prefers to sit next to me on the chairs.
11:15AM: Video time is part of the storytime. My kids love this because Nagini gets zero screen time at home (with the exception of FaceTime or Skype with family) and Bunny gets it in really, really limited doses. Today it’s Dr. Seuss books and the video is Green Eggs and Ham.
We have a few minutes of more coloring time and I check out books.
11:53AM: We are home for lunch. I make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, with a piece of cheese, a couple of blackberries, and a handful of tomatoes.
While the kids eat, I unload the dishwasher.
Nagini is ready for her nap. While I put her to sleep, Bunny digs into the library books.
12:27PM: I clean up the remains of lunch.
12:30PM: Bunny and I snuggle in my bed for her nap. At one point she quit napping, but recently she’s napping again. (If she doesn’t nap, then we have quiet time.)
While I wait for her to fall asleep, I read a chapter of To Kill a Mockingbird. I’m reading it for the first time. (How did that happen?!) As soon as I finish reading, I am at the computer. This is where I catch up on celebrity gossip (I love it, love it, love it. It’s one of my vices.), pay bills, write and edit blog posts, and squeeze in every second to get the most I need to get done on the computer. Some days I work on other projects like scrapbooking or sewing.
1:40PM: Today it’s writing a couple of blog posts, and getting our documents ready for our CPA to file our taxes.
1:52PM: I wake up Bunny. She wants to cuddle. Fine with me.
2:00PM: We have “scrapbook time” and it means she plays with Project Life cards and crams them into pocket protectors. I work beside her on a scrapbook album of the places we have lived. (I’ll share more of that in a couple of weeks.)
3:03PM: Nagini wakes from her nap. She’s usually up by now, but she woke early two days in a row, so she makes up for it at naptime.
3:06PM: I cut an apple for their snack.
3:11PM: Some days, depending on the weather, we go to one of the neighborhood playgrounds or play in the backyard. Since it’s warm today and mosquitos are out (Bunny and I already sport matching ones on our feet), we stay inside.
We read the library books again. We play in the playroom. We play Tinker Toys. We read books in the playroom. They love reading Green Eggs and Ham and Bunny tells me it’s the same thing! (From the video at the library.)
3:59PM: I prepare dinner. We’re having scallion pancakes with braised pork.
4:21PM: While the food cooks on the stove, the kids have been playing, but they are antsy. I grab our dusters and have them follow me around the house. We dust the doors and baseboards and whatever else catches their eye.
4:37PM: The girls are done “helping”, and go into the playroom. I use this time to vacuum the front half of the house.
4:50PM: Brian’s home. The kids are so thrilled when Daddy’s home. They follow him and want him to play. We get ready to have dinner.
5:26PM: We’re in the middle of dinner, with lots of bribery involved. Finish your dinner, and you get ice cream! We talk with my mom on Viber. She is overseas visiting family. The kids miss her. I step away from the table and talk with my mom on the phone for around 20 minutes.
6:42: Bribery works in our house!
Brian and I clean-up the kitchen and dining table, sweep the crumbs, load the dishwasher. I finish vacuuming. We play a little, clean up the playroom, and have more dance parties as music plays in the background (Taylor Swift and Sam Smith).
7:20PM: We start bedtime routine. I get their bath started, and Brian gathers their pajamas. After the girls are dressed, I kiss them both goodnight. Brian reads with them, sings a few songs, and tucks them in for the night.
He finishes the bedtime routine since he’s been gone all day at work. The evening is Daddy/Daughter time, and he gets some one-on-one with them.
I use the free time to work on my scrapbook.
8:43: Brian is done working on the computer. He is getting the other part of our documents together for taxes.
8:57: We put away anything left around the house, talk a little, and settle in to watch a little television. I halfheartedly watch tv so I play more Plants vs. Zombies on the iPad.
Brian checks on the kids one more time. We get ready for bed, shower, talk, and such.
10:19: I have to read a little bit more of To Kill a Mockingbird. It’s the trial scene and I must read as much as I can.
10:33PM: Lights out! Good night!
What does your day look like? I don’t have all the answers on homekeeping, parenting, or life in general (I wish!), but I wanted to give a glimpse into how I get things done in our house.
