I’ve always been interested in homekeeping. When I was in college I used to clip the Hints from Heloise section of the Sunday newspaper and tape it into my journal! (I know, I am the life of the party!)
Once we bought our first house I really wanted to take care of it and keep it clean, and if there were tools that would save me time and money, then that was even better. Today, I’m sharing my three current favorite tools with you.
I’ve wanted a iRobot Roomba or a robot vacuum since our first house. Once we put in hardwood floors, it was shocking to see how easily dust bunnies gathered everywhere, especially under the furniture. But despite a little extra Christmas money from presents, we still didn’t buy one! Our frugality won out.
I had mostly forgotten about a robotic vacuum until we moved to our first house in Texas. It was a one story house with almost all tile and wood laminate flooring. And wow, were the dust bunnies out of control. (Everything’s bigger in Texas, right?) It was really hard to manage keeping the floors clean, especially with two young children in tow.
We bought a Roomba with our credit card cashback rewards that we had saved in our account for a while. It was worth it. This machine has changed my homekeeping life for the better. We have it running almost every day, unless one of the kids turns it off, and it picks up so much stuff.
I am continually surprised by how much dust it picks up even though it’s running nearly everyday. It saves me time because it helps to maintain the cleanliness of the floors. If our Roomba broke tomorrow, I would go ahead and buy another one. I am not joking when I say it is a household game-changer, especially if you have solid surface floors.
You know, it’s funny, but I only just discovered the steam mop a little over a year ago! I used to clean the floors with the traditional mop and bucket. I had heard about steam mops occasionally on my friends’s Facebook posts, and I bought one the year before last during Target’s online Black Friday sale. I think mine is this Shark Professional Steam Pocket Mop.
I wouldn’t say that it’s made mopping an enjoyable experience, but it has made it simpler. It’s probably user error, but sometimes when I use a traditional mop, the head falls off the pole. I constantly change the water in the bucket.
With the steam mop, I pour some filtered water into the machine and after a minute, it’s ready to go. I don’t have to use any chemicals or extra product, and the steam does an excellent job cleaning the floors.
Of course, the best part is when my husband helps and does the mopping!
Microfiber cloths are also another recent discovery. When they first came on the market over ten years or so ago, I ordered some online to use in place of my Swiffer. It was nice, but it wasn’t as effective as I had hoped.
Well, a couple of months ago, while we were unpacking the garage, I came across microfiber cloths used to wash cars. They are amazing. You can pick up a pack in the automobile section of most stores.
I love the durability and ease of wiping down surfaces. It makes for a great duster, it’s great on glass shower doors (I just wipe it when it is dry and it is all clean.), and I can re-use it over and over again.
What are your must-have tools? It’s funny my favorites are my newest finds, but if I find something that works better than what I was doing before, well, I am all for it! It’s also no surprise two of the three tools I’ve mentioned are floor cleaning products. Floors are my least favorite chore!
