At our old house, we didn’t have any back neighbors as it faced directly into some small woods. Sometimes we encountered animals in our backyard (or, sigh, in the pool).
One of my favorite “visitors” were the hummingbirds. The previous homeowners left an empty hummingbird feeder out, and I kind of left it neglected there until one day I saw a hummingbird stop by to check it out. When it saw that the feeder was empty, it flew away.
Right after that I filled it up and followed a simple recipe of mixing 4 parts filtered water to 1 part white sugar. I’ve done both the room temperature method of mixing it up and putting it in the feeder and also boiling the ingredients together with great success.
It was pretty exciting to see the visits increase until one day I spotted 5 hummingbirds gathered around the feeder! They were obnoxious with each other and fought for space instead of sharing like I’ve seen hummingbirds in Virginia do.
The craziest part was watching lizards come and visit the feeder as well
At our current house we have almost zero backyard space, so I’m still trying to figure something out. (Maybe the front yard?) I would love to encourage hummingbirds in our area even though we are in suburbia. Our neighborhood has rabbits running around, so I’m hopeful!
