I’ve been thinking about how often I hear people use conditional phrases about when they’ll get things done. The worst culprit of a conditional phrase is in regards to diet (“I’ll start my diet on January 1.”) or sometimes planning to have a baby because right now is not the “right time.”
In regards to homes, I’ve heard conditional phrases like:
- “I can’t clear out my closet because my spouse’s side is a mess.”
- “When the kids are in school I will have more time for myself.”
- “We will take our couples vacation next year when we have more time.”
This makes me really sad. I’ve come to realize there is no such thing as the “right time” and sometimes you just have to take whatever steps you can to achieve your goals even if it seems like years away.
It reminds me of that Pinterest phrase that floats around by Nike: Tomorrow You Will Wish You Had Started Today.
So, if your house is a mess, then start somewhere and don’t use excuses. Come up with a meal plan, simplify your filing cabinet, or just dedicate even 5 minutes to writing down some goals. You can do it!
