As I was doing my usual chores this morning, I realized that I do the same 3 things everyday to keep my house looking and feeling clean.
1. Make Your Bed
It’s funny I never really made my bed when I was younger, and definitely not in college, but as soon as we entered the “real world” I started making my bed nearly every day. There was a while when I would only make the bed on the weekdays, but now it’s become a habit to make it everyday. The only time I don’t make the bed now is if we’re on vacation and staying somewhere else!
I feel like a well-made bed just sets the tone for the day. Although I might not get to it as soon as I wake up, I’ll usually make it within the first hour. Even if our sheets are washed and finished drying in the evening, we’ll make the bed and then climb into it a few minutes later!
(Don’t mind the sparse room, we’re getting ready to do an update in a couple of weeks!)
2. Clear the Kitchen Counters
This makes such a big difference in how I feel in the morning too! We clear the counters in the evening after the kids are in bed. This means putting away the pots, pans, and other miscellaneous things that were laid to dry during the after dinner clean-up.
If the dishwasher is full, we’ll run it while we’re sleeping so that I can unpack it in the morning. During the day if I’m cooking, I’ll clear the counters again after each meal.
I haven’t wiped down the sink or done any major cleaning, but it looks a million times better with clear counters!
3. Run a Load of Laundry
I try to run a load of laundry almost every day. If it’s not every day, it’s every other day. I find that when the laundry pile gets too big, it’s really overwhelming. We cloth diaper, have a paperless kitchen (dishcloths, cloth napkins), and semi-paperless cleaning supplies. I never run out of laundry to do around here!
I’m not sure what the cost difference is, except maybe you’ll use more detergent. I try to find alternative ways to keep it less pricey to wash per load, such as hanging wet laundry to dry and making our own detergent.
And there you have it! Those are my everyday approaches to keeping my house cleaner and under control. What about you? How do you keep up with your home?
