My favorite book that I read last year was The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo. It was a game changer for me as we were getting ready to sell and move from our house. I saw my stuff in a new way.
I was excited to see the companion journal, Life-Changing Magic: A Journal: Spark Joy Every Day, in hopes that it would give me a jump start on the new year. The product description listed it as a 3 year journal to help us expand our activities, relationships, and experiences and to explore whether or not it would “spark joy” in those areas of our lives.
Unfortunately, upon receiving it, it wasn’t quite what I envisioned for a journal. The book is small, around 5×7 inches. Each page has the date on the top, followed by 3 broken up paragraphs (for the 3 year part). It’s an interesting idea, but I’m not even sure if there would be room to really write anything more than a couple of sentences per day.
While the journal has quotes scattered here and there from the book, and every other page has a small “does it spark joy?” on the top corner, there’s not much else to go on. It’s a very simple journal and I was disappointed that there wasn’t more to it. Including prompts and forgoing the “3 year” journal would have probably made it more interesting.
I’ll continue to be a fan of Marie Kondo and reference her amazing books, but I’d take a pass on the journal unless you are a big fan of journaling in general.
