I’ve mentioned my interest in learning calligraphy off and on through the years. There’s something really cool about using a pen and making beautiful written words as art.
In Simply Calligraphy: A Beginner’s Guide to Elegant Lettering, Judy Detrick walks you through the basics in lettering. The book is short; it is less than 100 pages with not a whole lot to go through. There isn’t a lot of walk-through in the text, and in fact, the margins are huge so it’s really like a 5×7 amount of text on the left side of the pages. On the right side of the pages are examples, but they are very sparse and cover only that letter example.
I think this book works for a very early stage beginner, but I also wonder if more information would be readily available just through searching the web. The information is presented in a well-organized layout and form, but there just isn’t a whole lot to grab your attention.
I would use this book to reference how to do traditional calligraphy letters, and with its beautiful book cover, there isn’t anything new or interesting in it to make me want to keep coming back to it.
