Our house basically has three entryway spaces. People jokingly say they can park a car in the biggest section of the hallway. It’s true. The “room” has been driving me crazy since we’ve moved in. It’s a large area, around 12 feet by 10 feet.
The hardest part about making the space work is that it’s in the middle of the house. Originally I had it as a “library” by putting our Expedit shelves in there and it was mostly a pass-through zone:
Next, we decided to build out our remaining Expedit pieces to make like a “study” area and for a little while it was better. Here’s the view of the space around Christmas last year:
But shortly after I felt like I was look at boxes and cubes every time I walked by. It was not working for me. After we did our office and game room updates, we went ahead with future planning and decided to make it a homework/study/piano area.
I’m not sure if that even makes sense, but here’s what it looks like today:
We bought two Micke desks at Ikea when they had an additional 15% off sale along with a drawer storage unit. I would like to eventually get some chairs for the space, probably stools or something that can be tucked under and out of the way so that it’s still like a credenza.
The drawer storage unit is currently holding the kids summer homeschooling supplies. It sounds very glamorous, but it’s just workbooks and flashcards that are hand-me-downs or purchased at the dollar section at Target to do some review this summer before Bunny goes to kindergarten. It’ll get cleaned up after school starts.
Here’s the left side. Basket holds current library books. This will be the piano zone when I eventually get to learning how to play and/or if/when my kids take piano lessons:
The drawers are mostly empty in both desks. I would like to put some art/school supplies one of these days:
The nice thing about these desks is that there are spots for wire management. This is a plus because we can put our iPhones/iPads/earphones/Kindle etc. for charging.
The other side of the wall is empty. We’ve talked about maybe getting an inexpensive and narrow couch for future seating and we haven’t found the right piece of art for the wall yet.
So, it’s not a complete room and I don’t know if it will be for a while. We’re not in a rush to do any more in this space.
If you have any ideas on how to handle this area, please help me! I am not 100% settled, but this is the closest to being settled I’ve been about this space since buying the house and moving in.
