Over the last year of living here, we have hosted everything from weekly game nights to family and friend visits to many overnight guests. We try to be as welcoming and accommodating as possible to make sure our friends and family are comfortable in our home.
Today I wanted to share some tips on what I think makes a good host.
+ Go with the flow and the right attitude. Remember, this is all temporary! Hosting guests can be stressful, especially for me. I want things to flow smoothly but it can be emotionally draining to make sure it all does. And you know what, it’s okay if the visit isn’t perfect, because it’s about the time you spend with your loved ones.
+ Give accessibility. Provide towels, linens, access to your washing machine, Wi-Fi info (here‘s a whole bunch of free ones, just pick your favorite!), toiletries, and so on. One of our friends is in a wheelchair, so we had removed the door to a bathroom so that she could use it unassisted. Give them their space to put their stuff whether it be a closet, drawer, or counter.
+ Be prepared. Stay organized, keep track of time. I’m not saying you should watch the clock like a drill sergeant, but you should be mindful of when mealtimes will be and how much time you need to get ready for meals. You should also make sure you have planned out the meals you are having so that you don’t have to make unexpected grocery runs at the supermarket. Make sure you have fresh linens washed and available.
+ Keep everyone engaged. Make sure everyone has “something to do” by his or her choice. What I mean is to check and see if anyone is being left out of a conversation, game, or activity. Don’t have people left out of things (unless they want to be).
+ Communication is key. Check with your guests before they arrive. Ask them if they need anything, have meal allergies or aversions, talk about plans and so on. It really does make a difference if you talk about expectations on what they should bring, and what you can provide.
