It turns out that we’re pretty big fans of Ravensburger anyway! Some of our favorite puzzles in our family are by Ravensburger, including their Wasgij series (example here). Every time we get my mom one of their 1000+ piece puzzles, she comments about how they are her favorite brand to play with. The quality of components in their products are wonderful and I never worry about it being too flimsy.
Ravensburger sent me a copy of their Empire State Building – Night Edition – 3D Puzzle to review. I haven’t worked on a 3D puzzle in years, so it was a fun project for me to work on during our family movie night.
Everything was bagged and nicely organized as I needed them. It was actually not too dissimilar from the way Lego has their pieces bagged and sorted in their packaging.
I thought I would I have to piece it together on my own like a puzzle, but it turns out the back of each piece is numbered with directional arrows on where things need to go.
It took me a couple of starts and turns before I got the hang of it. I was a bit nervous about bending the corner pieces and it turned out that I didn’t bend them hard enough! I should have known that Ravensburger would make a quality component and it wouldn’t break! 😉
Once I realized how sturdy the plastic pieces are, and they weren’t going to just snap apart, I zipped right through finishing it.
The most fun part of the puzzle is the “Night Edition” in that the base allows you to put in batteries and LED lights up the building.
I would not necessarily recommend it for people expecting a traditional puzzle experience. I would recommend this for people who like building models, because it gave me that same feeling as I worked on it. I don’t think I would call it a puzzle though. It reminded me a lot of building a Nanoblock or a Lego model in that I was following directions.
Overall, I was happy to have a fun project to work on for an evening and look forward to seeing what other fun products Ravensburger produces.
